LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball dropped a close 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 match to Academy of Art Saturday at the Cannon Activities Center.
Brittany Waite carried BYU-Hawaii (4-12, 2-5 PacWest) with 11 kills at a .304 hitting percentage and added six blocks. Sinamoni Tonga contributed 10 kills, Lacy Lange recorded six blocks and Kayle Park finished with 18 assists.
Melissa Brum led Academy of Art (5-11, 3-4 PacWest) to victory with 11 kills. Lilika Teu ended with 28 assists and Kabrina Speakman had 16 digs.
The Seasiders recorded 41 kills, while the Urban Knights had 32, but BYU-Hawaii ended with 27 attack errors to Academy of Art's 15. The Urban Knights finished with four service aces, holding the Seasiders to one.
Kills by Waite and Tonga helped the Seasiders take a 3-1 lead, but an attack error allowed the Urban Knights to tie it 4-4. The score remained close until a 4-point run with a block and two kills from Lange gave BYU-Hawaii a 13-10 advantage. Two block assists from Brum and Margaret Winkler helped push Academy of Art back up 16-15. The Urban Knights used four more blocks to build a lead and secure the 25-21 first-set victory.
Safua Elisaia recorded three kills at the start of the second set to put Academy of Art up 6-2. A kill and block by Nu'umau Coleman closed the gap to 6-5, allowing the Seasiders to remain on the Urban Knights' heels until Academy of Art broke away 13-9 off a kill and ace by Ema Causevic. Two kills and a block by Coleman put BYU-Hawaii back within one at 15-14 before Lange's kill tied the set 17-17. The Urban Knights regained the lead and took the set 25-23 on a kill by Causevic.
Academy of Art built an early 5-3 advantage, but BYU-Hawaii answered back to gain a 7-6 edge. The teams traded points with neither getting ahead by more than one point until a block by Elisaia and Bailey Soolsma put the Urban Knights up 16-14. A 4-0 streak extended Academy of Art's lead to 21-17 and BYU-Hawaii closed it to 21-20, but another block gave the Urban Knights the 25-23 win.
