Seasiders fly past Eagles

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 1 BYU-Hawaii cruised through the first round of the PacWest Championship sweeping Condordia University Irvine in a 5-0 match.

"We beat a very good team today," BYU-Hawaii head coach Dave Porter said. "We have a short turnaround and will face an even better team tomorrow."

No. 2 doubles partners Nannan (Dallas) Zhang and Xin (Summer) Wen recorded the first point of the match for the Seasiders (20-0) with an 8-1 victory over the Eagles' (7-10) Caitlyn Uzzi and Andrea Madrigal in the first court. Jade Griffin and Kanela Adamson of BYU-Hawaii rolled through their match against Kelsey Markle and Ivana Vlakic of Concordia in an 8-2 victory.

No. 16 double partners Min (Karen) Liu and Shu-Ying (Suzie) Hsieh fell behind 4-1 against Eagle's Johanna Keeline and Samantha Schuster before storming back to win 8-5 in the second court and finish the sweep of doubles.

Hsieh was able to finish first in the fourth court defeating Concordia's Schuster 6-1, 6-1 to put the Seasiders within a point of victory in the match. No. 47 Wen closed out the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Luisa Sterkel.

BYU-Hawaii will take on No. 35 Cal State University-Los Angeles Friday at 9 a.m. MST. Live stats will be available online.
