Seasiders split with Sharks

KANEOHE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii softball held on for a 5-4 victory before dropping a 7-0 contest to Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at Howard A. Okita Field.

Chelsea Childs Lambert (5-3) earned her second consecutive victory after allowing three earned runs over seven innings in the first game. Tiffany Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game for the Seasiders (9-19, 5-13 PacWest) with two RBI, while teammate Alexa Barrett also added a 2-for-4 performance with one run and one RBI.

Paige Crawford (4-6) led the Sharks (11-17, 7-9 PacWest) to victory in the second game with a complete-game shutout of the Seasiders. Dominique Walker went .500 (2-for-4) at the plate with a home run and two RBI in the game.

Game one

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Carolann Toyama doubled to left center to ignite the Sharks' offense in the bottom of the third. Kiona Wolfe singled through the left side and a throwing error allowed Toyoma to come home and give HPU the 1-0 lead.

BYU-Hawaii answered in the top of the fifth when Brandy Karl walked and Tiffany Smith singled to left field to advance Karl to second. T. Anu Memea stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle to bring home Karl and tie the game. Lambert and the defense heldstrong in the bottom of the frame retiring the side to keep the game tied.

Sarah Captain led off with a single up the middle in the top of the sixth to give the Seasiders momentum. A sacrifice bunt advanced Captain to second and Alexa Barrett sent the ball down the left-field line to give BYU-Hawaii the 2-1 lead with an RBI double. Kalynn Latu continued the offensive surge with an infield single to short, advancing Barrett to third.

Pinch hitter Makaela Williamson then singled to center field to bring home Barrett. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sharp groundball that deflected off the first baseman's glove. Smith singled down the right-field line to bring both runners home and give BYU-Hawaii the comfortable 5-1 lead.

Hawaii Pacific battled to catch up when Dominique Walker singled and Kayla Sanchez homered to left field to bring the score to 5-3 heading to the final inning of play.

After holding the Seasiders scoreless in the top of the frame, Noelani Boyer homered to left center to score bring the game within one. Toyama walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice to put the tying run in scoring position for the Sharks. Lambert forced a popup to the catcher on the next at bat to get within and out of the victory and Captain grabbed a fly ball in left to secure the Seasider victory.

Game two

The Seasiders threatened first in the second game when Singles by Karl and Memea put runners on the corners for Brittany Vasquez, but HPU's Britney Stevens was able to grab a sharp line drive at first and step on the bag for the top of the third inning ending double play. Walker began the scoring for the Sharks in the bottom of the frame with a home run to centerfield to with a runner on first for the 2-0 lead.

Nicole Viena followed a double by Boyer with a triple to left field to extend the lead in the fourth. Toyama's sacrifice fly brought home another and Mari Kajiwara added won more with a single to left to make it 5-0.

HPU's Gabriella Fordiani added an RBI single in the fifth and Kayla Sanchez had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to finish the scoring for the day.

The Seasiders will host the Sharks in their final home games of the year on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon HST. Live stats will be available online.
