LAIE, Hawaii – Senior outfielder Tiffany Smith hit a 3-run home run to give BYU-Hawaii softball the doubleheader split with Academy of Art. The Urban Knights (10-11-1, 6-2 PacWest) took the first game 8-0, while the Seasiders (8-18, 4-12 PacWest) came back for the 6-4 victory in the second.
Smith finished the day 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore first baseman Brittany Vasquez added a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI in the second game. Senior pitcher Chelsea Childs Lambert (4-3) earned the victory allowing two earned runs over seven innings.
Jessica West powered Academy of Art at the plate hitting .625 (5-for-8) with three runs and two RBI.
Juliana Lopez scored from second for the Urban Knights after the Seasiders' Corallee Alexander was taken out at second base trying to turn a double play and her throw to first went wide.
Academy of Art added more runs in the third inning, beginning when Jennifer Thompson singled through the left side and advanced on an error before Jessica West singled and advanced on the throw. Lopez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Brenna Mitchell singled to center field to score Thompson. The Seasiders stopped the next two batters but Samantha Klune singled to the shortstop to send West home and extend their lead to 3-0.
West doubled down the left-field line to bring home another in the fourth and was able to beat out a pickle to steal home during the next at bat to make it 5-0 at the end of four.
The Urban Knights continued to bat around scoring one run in each of the next three innings.
BYU-Hawaii was able to get some momentum offensively in the second game. Brittany Vasquez singled up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fourth. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. When Alexa Barrett hit a long fly ball to right field, Vasquez came home to put the Seasiders ahead 1-0.
The lead was short lived as Hallie Curtis walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice in the top of the fifth. West singled to right field and advanced on the throw to put two runners in scoring position. A double to center field by Lopez allowed Curtis and West to come home, giving the Urban Knights a 2-1 lead. Lopez then scored from third when her teammate drew a pickle between first and second to make it 3-1.
Makaela Williamson led the BYU-Hawaii response with a single down the right-field line. Alexander came in to pinch run and advanced to third on a sacrifice and T. Anu Memea's single. Vasquez singled to left center and brought home both runners home to tie the game 3-3.
Katie Tablada reached on a fielding error in the top of the sixth frame before another error on West's single allowed her to make it home and give the Urban Knights a 4-3 lead.
Williamson singled with one-out in the sixth and Brandy Karl drew a walk to put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the inning. Smith then stepped to the plate and sent a high-fly ball just over the left-field fence to give the Seasiders the 6-4 lead.
Academy of Art brought the tying runner to the plate after Mitchell led off the seventh with a walk, but Brenna Youngquist lined out to Kalynn Latu at short who also caught Mitchell off the bag at first for the double play. Sarah Captain then tracked a ball down in foul territory for the final out.
BYU-Hawaii will return to the field on Saturday at Hawaii Pacific for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. HST. Live stats will be available online.
