HILO, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii softball was unable to pull off the upset against Hilo on the first day of doubleheaders, dropping 3-2 and 10-0 games.
Meghan Wantz (2-5) pitched five strong innings for the Seasiders (2-8, 0-2 PacWest) before two Vulcan homeruns in the bottom of the sixth put them ahead late. Bailey Gaspar hit the go-ahead homerun for Hilo (10-5, 2-0 PacWest) in the first game and added two walks, a run and an RBI in the second game.
T. Anu Memea started the Seasiders off right in the first game drawing a walk followed by singles from Brittany Vasquez and Lizabelle Talataina to center field to load the bases with one out. Makaela Williamson then drew the walk to score Memea and give BYU-Hawaii the 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Alexa Barrett took one for the team to start off the second inning and Sarah Captain drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Rebecca Mawson executed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. Tiffany Smith followed with a double to right field to score Barrett for the 2-0 lead. Hilo then worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game close.
The bottom of the second was three up, three down for the Seasiders as pitcher Meghan Wantz struck two of the three Vulcan batters out.
Hilo were able to cut into the Seasider lead in the third after an error and a single put two runners on the bases for Hilo. Brittany Huff reached on another BYU-Hawaii error to score Chenoa Au from second.
BYU-Hawaii maintained the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when Cristina Menjivar hit a homerun over center field to tie up the game 2-2. Two pitches later, Gaspar hit another homerun to give the Vulcans the 3-2 advantage they needed for the win.
Hilo maintained the momentum in the second game scoring seven runs on five hits and three errors to start the second game. It was all downhill from there as BYU-Hawaii managed only two hits and fell 10-0 in five innings.
The Seasiders and Vulcans will square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon HST. Live stats will be available online.
