BELMONT, Calif. – Sophomore second baseman Alexa Barrett led BYU-Hawaii softball from the plate, but Notre Dame de Namur captured both games of the doubleheader on Monday. The Seasiders (10-32, 6-26 PacWest) were unable to close out the games, as the Argonauts (22-27, 16-12 PacWest) used a big sixth inning to win the first 7-0 followed by a walk-off 7-6 victory in the second game.
Barrett finished the day 4-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Lizabelle Talataina continued her strong play after being named the PacWest Player of the Week with a 3-for-4 performance with a homerun and two runs in the second game of the series.
Notre Dame de Namur was able to get an early lead in the first game on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first inning. Destyni Valencia (6-16) did not allow another runner to cross in the inning with consecutive groundouts ending the inning.
The game became a pitchers duel with very few scoring chances for either team until the fifth inning. Sarah Captain led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to left field and Barrett followed with a single of her own to put the tying run in scoring position. The Seasiders were unable to capitalize and the Argonauts maintained the 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame de Namur's bats came alive in the sixth inning as they scored six runs on two doubles, a triple and a homerun to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Argonauts scored the first runs of the second game as well with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame de Namur added a two-run homerun from Monica Volz in the top of the fifth and scored two more on an error to increase its lead to 5-0 heading to the sixth.
Talataina singled to spark the Seasiders in the sixth inning. Whitley Haimin laid down a sacrifice bunt on the next at bat, but the throw to first sailed into right field to allow Talataina to cross the plate and advance Haimin to third. Captain then walked and Barrett singled to bring in another run for the Seasiders. Tiffany Smith added a two-out single to bring home Captain and cut the Argonauts' lead to 5-3. Pitisi Tualau sat down all three Notre Dame de Namur batters in the bottom of the sixth to keep the momentum going.
Talataina sent a ball well over the left-field fence to start the Seasiders offense in the seventh and close the gap to one. Captain, Barrett and Gustafson then added back-to-back-to-back doubles to score two more and take a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the frame the Argonauts put a runner on after an error and a walk put the winning run on the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Gianna Gesler sent a ball to the left field fence to bring home both runners and end the game.
The Seasiders will wrap up their season on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Menlo College beginning at noon PDT. Live stats will be available online.
