SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 27 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis won their quarterfinal matchup Thursday 5-1 over No. 45 Holy Names at the Surprise Tennis Complex.
The Hawks (4-8) took the first match of day with No. 20 Matthew Halligan and Bernardo Moraes topping the Seasiders' (17-6) Sterling Galli and Chia-Hua Lu 8-3 in doubles. Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo and Simon Guillin quickly leveled the team score with an 8-3 victory over Jonah Tahilan and Javier Luque. Ibrahim Karmadzha and Ian Galli finished doubles with an 8-5 win on court three to give BYU-Hawaii the 2-1 advantage heading to singles.
Guillin added to the Seasiders lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ivan Parra and Lu added a 6-1, 6-0 win of his own over Luque to put them within a match of the team victory. No. 38 Ucelay battled back from an early deficit in singles to take a 6-4, 6-2 match to seal the victory. The remainder of the singles matches were left unfinished with BYU-Hawaii leading by a set in each.
The Seasiders will meet No. 11 Azusa Pacific in Friday's semifinal at 9 a.m. MST. The Cougars defeated Point Loma 5-0 in their opening match of the tournament. Live stats will be available online.
