SAN DIEGO – No. 26 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis defeated No. 22 Point Loma Nazarene University 5-4 Tuesday at the PLNU Tennis Courts.
The Sea Lions (1-7) took an early lead when CJ Erion and Jesse Miritello defeated the Seasiders' (4-1) Sterling Gall and Chia-Hua Lu 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Ian Galli and Ibrahim Karmadzha evened the score with an 8-4 win on the third court. Point Loma's Brendon Millington and Yuki Okamoto held off Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo and Simon Guillin in a tightly contested 9-8 lead to take the 2-1 advantage heading to singles.
Guillin was quick to level the team scores again making quick work of Okamoto in a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four. Miritello responded for the Sea Lions with a 6-4, 6-3 win on the sixth court, but the lead would be short-lived.
Ucelay bested Erion 7-5 in the first set on court two and then took the second set 6-4 for the match win. Lu won in similar fashion taking a 7-6 tiebreaker in the first set followed by a 6-4 win for the match on court five for the 4-3 match lead.
The final two matches went three sets as the teams jockeyed for the victory. S. Galli took an early lead on Millington with a 6-4 first set victory, but Millington battled back and took the second set 7-6 in the tiebreaker. Millington then held off Galli again in a tight 7-5 win to take the match for the Sea Lions.
Karmadzha battled Jack Alston for the deciding point on court three. He started strong for the Seasiders with a 6-2 win in set one, but Alston answered with a 7-6 win in the second set. Karmadzha regained his form to take a 6-3 victory to give BYU-Hawaii the match.
BYU-Hawaii will return to the court Wednesday to take on Biola at 2 p.m. PST.
