Seasiders unable to overcome top-ranked Sharks

HONOLULU – No. 17 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis fell in a 5-0 match to No. 1 Hawaii Pacific University on Wednesday afternoon at Ala Moana courts.

No. 20 doubles pair Martin Chojnacki and Yevhen Zakharov lost a 9-7 competition to No. 5 Thibaud Berland and Yann Renault of HPU (19-0). Peng Dai and Wei-Feng Lee fell 8-5 to Maik Burlage and Marko Lenz. Colton Pate and Ibrahim Karmadzhe were defeated 8-2 by Clemens Graute and Jaume Martinez Vich.

No. 39 Chojnacki retired in a 6-1, 2-1 match to No. 2 Lenz and Zakharov retired 6-1 to No. 8 Berland. All other singles matches were unfinished as the Sharks secured the win over the Seasiders (14-8).

BYU-Hawaii will head back to the mainland next week for the PacWest Tennis Championships in Surprise, Arizona, April 16-18. BYU-Hawaii will enter as the No. 3 seed in the tournament and face Azusa Pacific under the current rankings.
