RIVERSIDE, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii kept things interesting until the end, but fell 97-90 to Cal Baptist on Wednesday night in the Van Dyne Gymnasium.
Cory Lange led the Seasiders (12-8, 9-6 PacWest) with a career-high 29 points, including four 3-pointers. Lange's previous career-high was 25 points against Chaminade last season. Justin Park contributed 19 points, while Scott Friel recorded a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Yamzon and Ian Harward each added 13 points.
Gelaun Wheelwright led all players with a career-high 38 points. Taj Spencer recorded a double-double for Cal Baptist (18-5, 9-4 PacWest) with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
BYU-Hawaii shot 58.1 percent from the field and 56.3 from behind the arc, holding Cal Baptist to 45.8 and 50, respectively. The Lancers outrebounded the Seasiders 38-32 and took advantage from the charity stripe connecting on 86.4 percent (19-22) of their free throws.
After trailing for most of the first half, Cal Baptist roared out of the break to tie the game at 54 on a 7-point run by Wheelwright and Spencer. The Seasiders built back up a slight lead until Spencer tied it again at 60 with 11:43 remaining. The teams traded leads until Wheelwright hit two shots from the perimeter to lead a 12-3 run to take the lead for good at 81-73 with 4:33 left.
The Lancers started the first half on an 11-2 run with five points from Wheelwright to take the 14-6 lead early. Friel sparked a 7-point answer to close the gap to 14-13 with 14 minutes remaining.
A 9-0 run with two 3-pointers from Yamzon gave BYU-Hawaii a 22-17 advantage with under 12 minutes to play in the half. Park started his hot shooting and recorded eight points during a 13-2 run, pushing the Seasiders ahead to 37-23.
Cal Baptist closed the gap back to single digits with a 7-0 run, making it a 37-30 game with four minutes in the first half. BYU-Hawaii answered back with a 7-point run of its own before Jordan Giusti hit a 3-point jumper at the buzzer make it 46-38 in favor of the Seasiders at the half.
BYU-Hawaii tried got back within two possessions twice in the final two minutes of the game, but were unable to get any closer.
