LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii men's basketball fell 98-94 in a tightly-contested game with California Baptist on Saturday night at the Cannon Activities Center.
Cory Lange led BYU-Hawaii (10-7, 7-5 PacWest) with 21 points on the night, including four 3-pointers. Scott Friel contributed 20 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists. Justin Yamzon ended with 17 points and four 3-pointers.
Michael Smith recorded a game-high 22 points for Cal Baptist (17-4, 8-3 PacWest) and Taj Spencer added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
There were five ties and 11 lead changes in the game. The Seasiders shot 52.2 percent from the behind the arc and held the Lancers made 42.1 percent. Cal Baptist won the game shooting 87.5 percent from the free-throw line, while the Seasiders shot 72.7 percent. The Lancers outrebounded the Seasiders 30-22.
Kalidou Diouf led the Lancers on a 13-2 run to build an early lead with 15 minutes in the first half. A 3-point jumper by Yamzon and a tip-in from Justin Park contributed to a 7-0 run to bring the Seasiders closer at 13-11 with 13:04 on the clock.
A 9-point run featuring five points from Yamzon pushed BYU-Hawaii ahead with 9:30 remaining at 22-18. Yamzon sank two additional 3-pointers and Lange added a free throw to extend the Seasider lead to 29-20 with 8:14 to go in the half.
Cal Baptist answered back with a 9-0 run of its own to regain the 32-31 advantage with 5:10 left. The teams traded leads and a 10-2 Lancer run sent them into the half ahead 47-43.
Cal Baptist began the second half with a 7-point run to gain a 54-43 edge with 18:38 remaining. BYU-Hawaii closed the gap back to four with 16:15 in the game after a 7-0 run of its own with a 3-pointer by Lange, making it 57-53.
Seesaw scoring continued for several minutes, but a 5-0 Seasider run closed the game to 75-73 with nine minutes to go. After a 3-pointer by Lange, Friel grabbed a rebound and capitalized with a jumper to take the 84-83 lead with 4:45 on the clock. They continued to trade baskets for the remainder of the game as the Lancers secured the victory.
BYU-Hawaii will return to the court on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. HST to play Dixie State. The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and live stats and audio will be available online.
