Lady Seasiders knock off Vulcans in five

HILO, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball edged out Hawaii Hilo in five sets (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-27, 16-14) on Saturday night in the Hilo Gymnasium.

"We started really well in the first two sets, but Hilo was able to take some momentum from us in the third set," BYU-Hawaii head coach Mona Ah-Hoy said. "I am glad we were able to dig deep in that final set and end our season with a win."

Sinamoni Tonga recorded a double-double with a career-high 31 kills and adds 16 digs and Leilani Adolpho had a double-double of 16 kills and 26 digs for the Seasiders (8-21, 6-14 PacWest). Lacy Lange finished her senior season with 18 kills.

Marley Strand-Nicolaisen equaled Si. Tonga's output with 31 kills and 16 digs for the Vulcans (10-16, 8-12 PacWest).

BYU-Hawaii finished with a .251 hitting percentage and 12 blocks on the night, while Hilo had a .237 percentage and 17 blocks.

The teams battled to an 8-8 tie to begin the first set when Si. Tonga found the court on a kill from to spark a 5-0 run and put the Seasiders up 12-8. A few points later, another kill by Tonga started a small 4-0 run that ended with a kill from Lange to make it 17-11 in BYU-Hawaii's favor. Despite Hawaii Hilo's attempt at a comeback, BYU-Hawaii was able to maintain the lead with kills from Lange, Kayle Park and Tonga to take the set, 25-22.

The Vulcans struck first in the second set going on a 5-1 run. Adolpho, Brittany Waite and Sofia Tonga each had kills to keep the set close until a service error ignited the Seasiders offense on a 6-point run to give them their first lead of the set at 18-17. Si. Tonga then took control with a  personal 4-0 run on kills and BYU-Hawaii closed out the 25-22 set victory.

After the teams traded the first several points in the third set, the Vulcans took the lead for good with a four unanswered to pull ahead 6-2. Hilo used another 4-0 run to widen its lead and make it a 12-5 game in their favor. The Seasiders closed the gap as Adolpho led a 5-1 run with two kills to make it 14-11. The Vulcans then took control ending the set on an 11-3 run.

Tonga and Adolpho each had kills to help the Seasiders keep the fourth set close, battling to an 11-11 tie. The teams matched each other point-for-point with a kill from Adolpho tying it at 20. Waite and Kayle Park combined on a block to give the Seasiders match-point at 25-24, but Siera Green assisted on two blocks during a set ending 3-0 run for the Vulcans to tie the match at two sets a piece.

The fifth set was close as the teams traded points, but an attack error from the Vulcans and a kill from Lange gave the Seasiders the slight 10-8 lead. Strand-Nicolaisen found the court on back-to-back kills to turn the momentum in favor of Hawaii Hilo as it took the 11-10 advantage. Lange retaliated with a 3-0 run of her on to swing the match back to the Seasiders ,13-11. After tying again at 14-14, kills from Adolpho and Waite finished the set 16-14 and gave the Seasiders the match.

The win ends the Seasiders 2016 season.
