LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball dropped a 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 match to Fresno Pacific Wednesday night at the Cannon Activities Center.
The Seasiders (4-13, 2-6 PacWest) finished with 56 kills and 47 assists to Fresno Pacific's (5-7, 3-5 PacWest) 52 and 51, respectively. The Sunbirds had a .238 hitting percentage, holding BYU-Hawaii to .161.
Lacy Lange and Sinamoni Tonga led all players with 16 kills apiece. Lange recorded a .387 hitting percentage and Tonga added nine digs. Leilani Adolpho contributed 16 digs and Kayle Park finished with 23 assists.
Mitchell Karah led Fresno Pacific with a double-double of 15 kills and 17 digs. Montana Lowe recorded 12 kills at a .524 hitting percentage and Jasmine Phoolka had a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs.
Two kills by Tonga sparked an early 5-1 run, allowing the Seasiders to build a 7-3 lead in the first set. As the teams traded points, BYU-Hawaii was able to hold the lead until a 4-point streak by Fresno Pacific featuring consecutive blocks by Lowe tied the set 14-14. A kill by Lowe sparked a 5-1 run for the Sunbirds, putting them ahead 21-17 before a kill by Carley Bock gave them a 25-20 win.
Seesaw scoring started the second set until two errors by Fresno Pacific and a kill by Tonga gave BYU-Hawaii a 10-7 advantage. Two kills and a block by Lowe powered a 6-0 Sunbird run, pushing them up 16-13. The Seasiders fought back and consecutive kills by Nu'umau Coleman tied it 21-21, but Phoolka's kill ended the set 25-22 for Fresno Pacific.
An 8-1 run, featuring a service ace from Christina Tran and two kills and two blocks by Lowe, built a 10-4 edge for the Sunbirds to begin the third set. Two kills by Adolpho and an ace from Park sent the Seasiders on a 5-point run to close the gap to 12-10. Lange highlighted a 6-1 run with a kill and two blocks to put BYU-Hawaii up 23-20 before a block assist by Coleman and Brittany Waite gave the Seasiders their first set at 25-21.
The Sunbirds raced out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set after two kills by Phoolka, but a 4-1 BYU-Hawaii run with three kills from Adolpho closed it to 8-7. Fresno Pacific held the lead and back-to-back kills from Hailey Hilvers extended it to 16-12. The final three points for the Sunbirds came off kills by Mitchell, winning the set 25-17.
