Seasiders cruise past Saints

LAIE, Hawaii – Senior setter Ying Chun (Michelle) Chen guided BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-12 sweep of Saint Martin's on Saturday night at the Cannon Activities Center.

"I think there is a lot we still need to work on and improve from this first week," BYU-Hawaii head coach Mona Ah-Hoy said. "We need to come out stronger to start sets and be more consistent throughout the match. It was a tough week of matches with several of the top teams in our region and we will face similar competition next week in the [GNAC-PacWest] Crossover."

Chen finished with 33 assists, eight digs, two blocks and two services aces to guide the Seasiders (2-2). Sophomore outside hitter Leilani Adolpho had a team high 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Malary Reid added nine kills for BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders held the Saints (0-4) to a .043 hitting percentage.

BYU-Hawaii grabbed the early momentum capitalizing on several errors by Saint Martin's during an 8-1 run to take an 8-2 lead. The Seasiders slowly increased their lead to double digits at 16-6 following a three-point spurt powered by a kill and ace from Chen. BYU-Hawaii led by as much as 12 on their way to a 25-15 victory.

The Saints kept things close to open the second set until a 4-0 run by the Seasiders pushed the lead to 9-4. Saint Martin's was not phased battling back with a 4-0 run of their own to close the gap back to one. Sinamoni Tonga sparked another 4-0 run with a powerful kill to force a timeout by the Saints. The Seasiders continued their strong team play with another 4-0 run to push the lead to 18-11. After Saint Martin's closed within four, Adolpho contributed two kills during a set-ending, six-point run.

Tonga kept BYU-Hawaii rolling in the third with two kills and an ace during an 8-1 run to open the set. Brittany Waite contributed two kills and a block during a five-point run to increase the Seasiders' lead to 16-4 as they cruised to victory.

BYU-Hawaii travels to Ellensburg, Washington, for the GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament. The Seasiders will open with a match Thursday against last year's NCAA West Regional host Northwest Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. PST. Live stats and video will be available online.
