IRVINE, Calif. – Pacific West Conference coaches voted senior Ying Chun (Michelle) Chen as the 2015 Preseason Setter of the Year and BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball finished third in the preseason poll on Tuesday.
The five-time defending PacWest champion Seasiders collected a league-high four first-place votes, but finished behind California Baptist and Point Loma with each team receiving three first-place votes. Dixie State and conference-newcomer Concordia rounded out the top five.
Chen redshirted last season, but led the PacWest in assists per set (11.66) and ranked fourth in services aces per set (0.44) in the Seasiders' run to the national title match in 2013. Chen is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American as a setter. She is also a two-time All-PacWest First Team selection and was named the 2011 PacWest Freshman of the Year. Chen was the only player from BYU-Hawaii selected on the Preseason All-PacWest team.
Point Loma senior Savannah Wedemeyer was named the Preseason PacWest Player of the Year, after earning Setter of the Year honors last season. Fresno Pacific senior Hannah Butler was selected as the Preseason Libero of the Year.
