HILO, Hawaii – Erh Fang (Ariel) Hsu led No. 4 BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball to their eighth consecutive victory in a straight set sweep of the University of Hawaii at Hilo (25-19, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday night at the Vulcans' Gymnasium.
Hsu led all players with 15 kills and a .636 hitting percentage. Shih Ting (Stella) Chen added 12 kills and 17 digs for her seventh consecutive double-double. Lacy Miyahira Lange added 11 kills and Elizabeth Blake Solaita had 45 assists.
The first set started with a close battle until Hsu led a 4-0 run with two kills to give BYU-Hawaii (11-3, 8-0 PacWest) an 11-8 lead. A 4-1 run pushed the Seasiders' lead to 19-14 late in the set and they were able to withstand the Vulcans' (4-8, 3-6 PacWest) attack on their way to a 25-19 set victory.
BYU-Hawaii jumped out quickly in the second set as Lange recorded two kills and Kathleen Collette had an ace during a 5-1 run. Hilo battled back with a 6-0 run to take a 9-8 lead, but BYU-Hawaii responded immediately with a 4-0 run from the attacking skills of Lange and Hsu to retake the lead for good.
The third set was a back and forth battle, but a 3-0 run gave the Seasiders an early 4-2 lead. The Vulcans clawed their way back tying the set at 9-9, but kills from Kalistina Takau and Chen gave restored BYU-Hawaii's lead. Hilo would draw as close as one, but both teams traded points and runs as the Seasiders closed out the sweep.
BYU-Hawaii returns home to face rival Dixie State in a battle of the PacWest's top two teams on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. HST in the George Q. Cannon Activities Center. Live stats and video will be available online.
