SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii's women's volleyball team swept Dominican in straight sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-18) on Friday night at the Conlan Center.
Shih Ting (Stella) Chen got her fourth consecutive double-double and her seventh this season with 16 kills and 12 digs. Elizabeth Blake Solaita also recorded a double- double with 33 assists and 13 digs, her fifth double-double of the season.
Both teams started the first set trading points to a 15-15 tie, until a kill by Lacy Miyahira Lange lit the spark BYU-Hawaii (8-3, 5-0 PacWest) needed to take control of the set. Dominican (2-12, 0-6 PacWest) was able to shorten the lead to 21-19 late in the set, but a kill by Chen started the 4-1 run that the Seasiders needed to take the first set.
Four kills by Erh Fang (Ariel) Hsu and three kills by Chen fueled a 13-0 run to begin the second set for BYU-Hawaii. Dominican was able to decrease the lead to seven points at 17-10 with two kills by Megan Callen and a service ace by Susanna Pilkerton. A kill by Kathleen Collette finished off the set 25-15 to take the game to the third set in favor of BYU-Hawaii.
The Penguins started quickly in the third set jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Chen brought the Seasiders back three consecutive kills of her own and four overall in a 5-0 to make it 10-9 in BYU-Hawaii's favor. The Seasiders went on a 3-0 run to make the set 15-11. Chen finished off the match with the final kill to cap another strong outing.
BYU-Hawaii returns to the court tomorrow to take on Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif. at 7 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available for the match.
