WAYNE, Neb. (Dec. 11, 2013) - BYU-Hawaii junior outside hitter Shih Ting (Stella) Chen was named a Daktronics First Team All-American while teammate and junior setter Ying Chun (Michelle) Chen was named a Second Team All-American.
BYU-Hawaii, along with Tampa, Concordia-St. Paul and Western Washington all had two players make one of the Daktronics All-America teams.
Stella Chen is the lone underclassman and one of two players to repeat as a Daktronics First Team All-American. She was a First Team All-American last season while collecting Third Team All-American honors as a freshman. Chen led the Seasiders to a 27-1 record this season and a second straight trip to the Elite Eight after averaging 5.09 kills and 5.66 points per game this season, ranking second in NCAA Division II in both categories this season.
Michelle Chen also repeats as a second team honoree in back-to-back seasons. She ranks tops in the PacWest and 11th nationally in assists per set at 11.62. Chen has helped distribute for the No. 4 ranked Seasiders who rank No. 4 in the country in assists per set, kills per set and hitting percentage.
BYU-Hawaii faces Ferris State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CT (10:30 a.m. HT) from Cedar Rapids Iowa. More info on the tournament.
