PORTLAND, Ore. (Dec. 5, 2013) – BYU-Hawaii outside hitter Shih Ting (Stella) Chen has been voted the NCAA Division II Daktronics West Region Volleyball Player of the Year.
Joining Stella Chen on the West Region first team was teammate and setter Ying Chun (Michelle) Chen. Stella Chen earned first team honors for the third year in a row, while Michelle earned second team honors last year.
Stella Chen currently leads the PacWest in scoring and kill average, boasting 5.69 points and 5.12 kills per set, both marks good for No. 2 nationally. She totaled 472.5 points this season on 425 kills, 28 aces, four block solos and 31 block assists.
She is seventh in the PacWest in hitting with a .319 percentage rate and sixth in aces per set with a 0.34 mark. She has 425 kills in 1020 attempts with 100 errors and also has played outstanding defense by recording 3.96 digs per set – eighth in the PacWest.
Michelle Chen has compiled 966 assists this year, averaging 11.64 per set to lead the PacWest. She also is second in aces per set (0.45) after recording 37 in 83 sets. Her 11.64 assists per set ranks 11th nationally.
The No. 4 BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball team just defeated Alaska Anchorage in the first round of the NCAA West Regional Tournament on Thursday and will face UC San Diego on Friday at 5 p.m. PT (3 p.m. HT) from San Bernardino, Calif.
