PHOENIX (Nov. 27, 2013) - For the third time in three years, BYU-Hawaii junior outside hitter Shih Ting (Stella) Chen was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Year.
In addition to earning Player of the Year honors for the third straight season, Chen was named All-PacWest First Team for the third time in three years and was one of three Seasiders earning all-conference honors.
Stella Chen currently leads the PacWest in scoring and kill average, boasting 5.69 points and 5.12 kills per set. She totaled 472.5 points this season on 425 kills, 28 aces, four block solos and 31 block assists.
She is seventh in hitting with a .319 percentage rate and sixth in aces per set with a 0.34 mark. She has 425 kills in 1020 attempts with 100 errors and also has played outstanding defense by recording 3.96 digs per set – eighth in the PacWest.
Teammate Michelle Chen– the 2011 PacWest Freshman of the Year- earned her second straight All-PacWest First Team selection.
Michelle Chen has compiled 964 assists this year, averaging 11.61 per set to lead the PacWest. She also is second in aces per set (0.45) after recording 37 in 83 sets for a 0.45 average.
Middle blocker, Ariel Hsu claimed Second Team accolades after being named to the Third Team in 2012. Hsu leads the PacWest in hitting with a .359 rate having committed just 44 errors in 423 chances while recording 196 kills. She averages 2.74 points and 0.59 blocks per set.
BYU-Hawaii begins postseason play at the NCAA West Regional Tournament in San Bernardino vs. Alaska Anchorage on Dec. 5.
