SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 9, 2013) – Winning 3-1 over Point Loma (25-15, 25-14, 25-27, 25-23) the No. 4 BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball team clinched the Pacific West Conference crown on Saturday night.
The Seasiders (23-1, 18-1) have now won outright or shared six of the last eight PacWest regular season titles, including the last five in a row.
The team has already clinched the automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
BYU-Hawaii seemed on a mission right from the start. Stella Chen, Erica Willes and Hsu all posted four kills in a dominating first set. The Seasiders led for almost the entire set en route to a 25-15 win.
In the second set the Seasiders were even more in control, taking a 1-0 lead and never looking back. BYU-Hawaii went up 10-5 and then stretched it to 16-6 to maintain momentum. Consistent play carried the Seasiders to a 25-14 set two victory to ramp up the pressure on the Sea Lions in set three.
Set No. 3 saw a late surge from Point Loma to stay alive in the match. BYU-Hawaii led 18-10 but the Sea Lions continued to chip away. Tied at 24-24, the Seasiders came up short in a 27-25 loss, just the seventh set loss on the season to have their match lead cut to 2-1.
BYU-Hawaii stayed calm and continued to do its thing in set four. The Seasiders led throughout the set, going up by seven at one point but was sure to keep the gas on. The team shut down another late rally and came away with a 25-23 win to secure the match 3-1.
The team will return and get some rest before welcoming Hawaii Pacific to the Cannon Activities Center on Nov. 21 for the final home match of the regular season. The Sea Warriors are the lone team to beat the Seasiders this year.
