LAIE, Hawaii. (Oct. 18, 2013) – The No. 5 BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball team took down the No. 25 Point Loma Sea Lions Friday night 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 25-19), knocking off the first-place team in the Pacific West Conference.
BYU-Hawaii (14-1, 9-1) handed Point Loma (17-4, 11-1) its first PacWest loss of the year.
The first set had a rough start as the Sea Lions took a lead of 5-0 against the Seasiders. With some well-placed kills by Stella Chen and Willes the Seasiders were able to catch up to Point Loma near the end of the set and tie the score 21-21. BYU-Hawaii downed Point Loma 25-23 to take an early match lead.
The second set started off close but BYU-Hawaii fell behind down the stretch despite some great blocks by Miyahira and Noel Pauga. Point Loma won the set 25-18 to even that match at one win apiece.
The Seasiders had the lead for the whole third set, with kills by Willes, Miyahira, and Stella Chen to pace the home team. Point Loma brought the score within one point at 17-16 but BYU-Hawaii took the third set 25-21.
BYU-Hawaii started strong in the fourth set, riding the momentum from set three to start out 10-3. The Seasiders controlled throughout the set, cruising to a 25-19 fourth-set win and 3-1 victory in the match.
