FRESNO, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2013)- In the fourth match of the mainland road trip, the No. 5 BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball team beat No. 22 Fresno Pacific in four sets (25-15, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19) on Monday night.
Even though the Seasiders (12-1, 7-1) were outhit at a .279 to .259 clip, they were able to beat the Sunbirds (9-6, 4-4) in four up and down games. Shih Ting Chen had 18 kills and 11 digs, Noel Pauga had 11 kills and Erh Fang Hsu had nine kills. Ying Chun Chen had 43 assists.
With the win, BYU-Hawaii improves to 4-0 on the road trip.
The first set of the match was started off by a kill by Shih Ting (Stella) Chen and after a close start it was all Seasiders from there on out after an 11-3 run to make it 21-12. A winning kill by Kathleen Colette ended the set with a score of 25-15.
The second set was close as the Seasiders and Sunbirds fought back and forth. BYU-Hawaii fell behind 13-8 but rallied to take a 17-16 lead and the Seasiders never trailed again. BYU-Hawaii won the set 25-23.
In the third set the Seasiders were able to keep up with the Sunbirds midway through the set trailing just 13-12. The road team appeared to be a little bit winded as Fresno Pacific went on a run and won the third set 25-14 to cut the BYU-Hawaii lead to 2-1 in the match.
The fourth set the Seasiders were rejuvenated and engaged in a tight battle tied 15-15. A 5-1 run gave BYU-Hawaii the space it needed with two kills from Stella Chen and an ace from Michelle Chen. Erica Willes finished off the Sunbirds with one more kill to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
BYU-Hawaii will conclude the long road trip with a stop at UH-Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
