Ying Chun Chen, two more Seasiders and squad earn PacWest honors

PHOENIX (Aug. 15, 2013) – Junior setter Ying Chun Chen (Michelle) was voted Preseason Pacific West Conference Player of the Year, three Seasiders were selected to the Preseason All-PacWest team and the women's volleyball team was voted to finish tops in the league.

Chen garnered seven first-place votes and totaled 112 points in the tabulations to edge her teammate and two-time PacWest Player of the Year OH/MB Shih Ting Chen (Stella) by one point. She led the Seasiders by compiling 1,175 assists this year. She averaged 12.24 assists and 2.71 digs per set.

Both Ying Chun Chen and Shih Ting Chen with junior middle blocker Erh Fang Hsu (Ariel) also made the preseason squad for 2013, giving the Seasiders a powerful triple-threat heading into the upcoming campaign.

BYU-Hawaii posted a 16-0 PacWest record in 2012 to claim the conference title and automatic berth in the NCAA II National Tournament. The Seasiders finished the year 25-4 overall and reached the national semifinals before falling to eventual National Champion Concordia-St. Paul.

The 2013 season begins Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. HT against the University of Alaska Anchorage in the Canon Activities Center.
