Seasiders fall in battle of unbeatens

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 1 BYU-Hawaii women's tennis and No. 2 Barry came down to the final set of a thrilling match at No. 3 singles, but the Seasiders (28-1) were unable to pull out the victory falling 5-4 to the Buccaneers (28-0) at Sanlando Park.

No. 8 Min (Karen) Liu faced off with No. 33 Verena Schmid in the deciding singles match. Schmid grabbed the first set 6-3, but Liu responded with a 6-4 victory in the second to set up the third and final set. Schmid jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Liu responded and broke twice to tie the set 3-3. After each player held serve, Schmid took a 30-0 lead in the next game with Liu battling back to tie it 30-30. Schmid then recorded the next two points to hold her serve and take the 5-4 lead. The players traded points to another 30-30 tie in the next game and Schmid grabbed the next two to seal the victory.

After Barry recorded a victory on the third doubles court to open the match, No. 1 Nannan (Dallas) Zhang and Xin (Summer) Wen grabbed an 8-3 victory in doubles over No. 4 Ana Pain and Sonja Larsen to tie the match. No. 12 Liu and Leah Heimuli then earned a 9-8 (4) win in a back-and-forth match with Zuza Maciejewska and Dasha Salnikova to give the Seasiders a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles.

Barry took the lead back with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles before No. 5 Wen defeated No. 11 Salnikova in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to tie the score once more. No. 1 Zhang recorded her 52nd consecutive singles victory after overcoming a first set loss to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 over No. 26 Maciejewska. Heimuli outlasted No. 21 Isabel Rapisarda to take the first set at No. 4 singles 7-6 (7) in the tiebreaker, but Rapisarda responded with 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the next two sets to set up the deciding point at the third court.

The loss ended the Seasiders 2017 season.
