ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – No. 1 BYU-Hawaii women's tennis opened the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships with a 5-0 sweep Wednesday over Queens (N.Y.) at Sanlando Park.
No. 1 Nannan (Dallas) Zhang and Xin (Summer) Wen put the the Seasiders (28-0) ahead early with an 8-0 victory over Emily Alplund and Angelika Sobiecka. Michelle Li Sha Khoo and Jeong-Min Jeon added an 8-0 victory of their own over their Knight (14-4) opponents moments later. No. 12 Min (Karen) Liu and Leah Heimuli finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Reehan Rashad and Laura Ortega Jover.
No. 1 Zhang got off to a slow start before storming to a 6-2 victory in the first set and led 3-0 in the second before her opponent retired to put BYU-Hawaii within a match of the team victory. No. 5 Wen wasted no time in securing the final point defeating Ortega 6-1, 6-0 on the second court. The Seasiders had leads in the remainder of the unfinished singles.
BYU-Hawaii will face its toughest competition of the season in the quarterfinals Thursday against No. 2 Barry (27-0) at 9 a.m. EDT at Sanlando Park. Live stats will be available online.
