ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Nannan (Dallas) Zhang, Leah Heimuli and Dave Porter were each selected as national award winners Monday as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association at the 2017 Division II NCAA Tennis Championships.
Zhang was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year after fininshing another undefeated season in both singles and doubles to stand atop the national rankings in both. Zhang has won 50 consecutive singles matches and 47 consecutive doubles matches over the parts of the last three seasons. She has a career record of 73-3 in singles and 86-6 in doubles.
Heimuli was awarded the ITA Rookie of the Year after finishing her first collegiate season undefeated in singles. She was 24-0 in singles to earn a No. 16 ranking in the west region. She was 22-2 in doubles, going 17-2 at No. 2 with Min (Karen) Liu and 4-0 at No. 1 with Zhang.
Dave Porter earned his seventh ITA Coach of the Year award after guiding BYU-Hawaii to another perfect regular season at 27-0 and its 11th straight PacWest Championship. Porter is the winningest collegiate tennis coach with a career record of 1,409-187 and his .883 winning percentage is the highest of any coach, of any sport, of any division in the NCAA.
Xin (Summer) Wen was awarded the ITA/Arthur Ashe West Region Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. Wen is 19-0 in singles, winning 246 of 282 games (.872) and 19-0 in doubles. She ended the season ranked No. 1 nationally in doubles with Zhang and No. 5 in singles.
The Seasiders compete Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Championships opening against Queens (N.Y.) at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, at noon EDT.
