Seasiders start 2017 with sweep

KAILUA KONA, Hawaii – No. 2 BYU-Hawaii women's tennis swept Hawaii Hilo 9-0 in their season opener Wednesday at the Holua Tennis Center.

Nannan (Dallas) Zhang and Leah Heimuli started doubles play with an 8-0 victory against Daniela Sanz Caseli and Sara Valero on the first court. The other two BYU-Hawaii (1-0) doubles pairs outlasted the Vulcans (0-1) 8-2.

No. 1 Zhang broke Caseli's serve midway through the first set to take the momentum on her way to a 6-3, 6-1 win on the first court. On the second singles court, Min (Karen) Liu had a similar match breaking serve late in the first set to take a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Valero.

Heimuli, Michelle Li Sha Khoo and Jeong-Min Jeon each defeated their Hilo opponents in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. McKenna Lloyd rounded out singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Caralyn Fitzpatrick.

The Seasiders remain in Kona to face Sonoma State tomorrow at 2 p.m. HST.
