Seasiders slam Golden Eagles

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 1 BYU-Hawaii women's tennis took commanding leads early and cruised to the 5-0  victory over No. 35 Cal State L.A. in the PacWest Championships Friday morning at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.

The Seasiders (21-0) swept doubles matches, beginning when No. 16-ranked Min (Karen) Liu and Shu-Ying (Suzie) Hsieh grabbed an 8-2 win at No. 2 singles. Jade Griffin and Kanela Adamson kept the trend going with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Pyper Brown and Elizaveta Sokolova of Cal State L.A. (12-9).

No. 2 Nannan (Dallas) Zhang and Xin (Summer) Wen finished the sweep with an 8-2 win over Kayleigh Hall and Nozomi Matsuoka.

No. 47 Wen started and finished strong in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Hall at No. 3 singles to put BYU-Hawaii within a point of winning the match. No. 1 Zhang traded games with No. 37 Matsuoka, but Zhang broke serve first and won the final three games to take the 6-4 set one win. Zhang took her momentum into the second set and won quickly, 6-1.

The rest of the matches ended unfinished with BYU-Hawaii leading by a set on all four courts.

The Seasiders will play No. 9 Hawaii Pacific for the championship Saturday at 9 a.m. MST. Live stats will be available online.
