SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 3 BYU-Hawaii women's tennis overcame a slow start to defeat No. 13 St. Mary's (TX) 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships at the Surprise Racquet and Tennis Complex.
Kanela Adamson and Jade Griffin started strong building a 6-3 lead, but St. Mary's (21-2) Felicity Delgado and Kerry Wiegand came back to tie the doubles match up at 6-6. Adamson and Griffin responded taking the final two sets for the Seasiders' (32-1) first team point. No. 22 Jin Jin (Leah) Han and Marietta Tuionetoa tried to battle back from an early hole, but fell 8-6 to the Rattlers' No. 21 Jamie Lee Denton and Kaylin Kruseman. No. 2 Min (Karen) Liu and Nannan (Dallas) Zhang fell behind 4-1 early, but continued to battle to take a 6-5 lead late. After St. Mary's No. 7 Cristina Lopez and Mariana Rong responded to take a 7-6 lead, Zhang and Liu countered again, winning the final two sets for the 9-7 victory.
The Seasiders fared better in singles with No. 7 Tuionetoa propelling BYU-Hawaii to a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Denton. Adamson then added a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Joanie Bryant on the sixth singles court and No. 1 Zhang ended it with a 6-2, 6-3 win against No. 31 Rong.
The Seasiders advanced to a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Barry (24-1) at 1 p.m. MST. Live stats and video will be available on the NCAA website.
