Zhang advances to singles final at USTA/ITA National Small College Championships

SUMTER, S.C. – Nannan (Dallas) Zhang swept Stephanie Hirsch of Indianapolis in straight games and BYU-Hawaii tennis won three of its four matches on Friday at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

"Overall I think we played better today," BYU-Hawaii head coach Dave Porter said. "We didn't play as well as I would've liked in doubles, but we made progress. There are still things that have to change before we're going to have really good doubles teams."

After her 6-0, 6-0 win, Zhang will face last year's champion Valentine Confalonieri from Lynn University in the Division II women's singles final. The final will be held tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

"Dallas played great today in singles against a pretty good player," Porter said. "[Confalonieri] is a good player and it will be a good match tomorrow. We're hoping for the best"

Zhang and Min (Karen) Liu rebounded in doubles on Friday defeating Jesse Burrell and Kiefer Shaw out of California University (PA) 6-3, 6-1 to finish fifth in women's doubles.

Yevhen Zakharov and Martin Chojnacki split two matches on Friday for the Seasiders. They defeated Aitor Reparaz and Joel Izquierdo out of West Virginia Wesleyan 6-0, 6-3 in the first match of the day. The duo then dropped their final contest in a super tiebreaker to Erik Aunapuu and Armand Levandi of Lewis University 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10).

Results for the women's single final will be posted online on the tournament website.
