Women's tennis wins opening round at PacWest Championships

SURPRISE, Ariz. (April 17, 2014) - The top seeded BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team topped opening round opponent Dominican with a 5-0 victory on Thursday afternoon at the Pacific West Conference Tennis Championships.

The No. 3 ranked Seasiders (24-0) stayed perfect with a sweep of doubles to start the day and handled all their singles matchups to move on with a win.

In the top doubles match, Min (Karen) Liu and Nannan (Dallas) Zhang won 8-2, with second doubles partners, Marika Kobayashi and Marietta Tuionetoa winning 8-1.

Third doubles featured Sasha Ulbrichtova and Jin Jin (Leah) Han picking up an 8-2 to win, making it 3 for 3 for BYU-Hawaii in doubles.

Just two points needed for victory, Ulbrichtova won third singles 6-1, 6-1 to claim the first of two needed singles points to secure the match. Jade Griffin downed her opponent 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot to seal the win.

The rest of the Seasiders' singles players were ahead in their matches but with the match in hand already went unfinished.

BYU-Hawaii will continue to the next round tomorrow vs. Academy of Art as the PacWest Championships continue through Saturday.
