No. 3 Seasiders claim 7-2 triumph over No. 4 HPU

LAIE, Hawaii (April 8, 2014) - In a matchup of two of the top women's tennis teams in the nation, the No. 3 BYU-Hawaii team downed rival No. 4 Hawaii Pacific 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

BYU-Hawaii (23-0) played its last home match of the season against another ranked foe, taking two of three doubles points and all but one singles matchup.

Ranked No. 4 nationally, Min (Karen) Liu and Nannan Zhang won first doubles 8-2 while No. 7 ranked Marietta Tuionetoa and Marika Kobayashi took second doubles 8-5.

Third doubles was back-and-forth with Jin Jin (Leah) Han and senior, playing her last home match, Sasha Ulbrichtova battling to take the third point. The duo eventually fell in the end after a tough battle, dropping their matchup 9-8(7).

No. 18 Zhang won No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2 over No. 25 Karen Ramirez-Rivera and No. 16 Min (Karen) Liu won second singles 6-1, 6-1.

HPU took a point when No. 20 Kobayshi came up short in a 6-2, 7-6(3) loss to Magdalena Smejova in the No. 3 spot.

In the fourth position, No. 23 Tuionetoa claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win and in the five and six matchups, Ulbrichtova won 6-1, 7-5 and Han won 6-4, 6-4.
