McCarthy led all players with four shots and one goal. Jessica Smith added the other goal for the Seasiders (1-4-1, 1-1 PacWest). BYU-Hawaii finished with 14 shots, while NDNU (2-5, 1-2 PacWest) totaled 11. Kelsey East (1-1) was strong in the net for BYU-Hawaii finishing with seven saves.
Kate Gurney found Jessica Smith on a free kick in the 29th minute and Smith was able to get a foot on the ball and put in the back corner of the net to give BYU-Hawaii the 1-0 lead it would need to win the game.
NDNU's only shot of the first half came from Macee Broer, but the ball went over the crossbar in the 21st minute.
A minute after the goal by Smith, Kristine Reynolds attempted to extend the lead, but the Argonauts' keeper was able to corral the shot. McCarthy then got in on the action with a shot from the top of the box that was inches above the crossbar in the 37th minute.
NDNU came out firing in the second half with two shots on goal in the first two minutes, but East got her hands on them to keep a clean sheet. The Argonauts continued to press with three more shots on frame and East continued to keep them out of the net.
After McCarthy barely missed on her first career goal on a loose ball in the box, she was able to find the back netting in the 74th minute after a pass from Reynolds put her 1-on-1 with the keeper in the center of the box to make it a 2-0 game.
The Seasiders will play Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. HST. Live stats will be available.
