Seasiders lose a heartbreaker to Urban Knights

SAN FRANCISCO – BYU-Hawaii women's soccer dominated in regulation, but fell 1-0 to Academy of Art on a last minute goal on Thursday at the Academy of Art soccer field.

"It's a heartbreak of a loss," said BYU-Hawaii assistant coach Dan Dummar. "We out shot Academy, but that's just how the game goes. I'm very proud of our girls and the game they played."

The game featured 22 shots with 10 of them being on goal for the Seasiders (3-10, 2-6 PacWest) as they held the Urban Knights (2-10-1, 2-5 PacWest) to only four shots on goal.

A late corner for Academy of Art in the 109th minute gave them the goal they needed as a corner kick from Rea Laudat curved in just outside the goalkeeper's reach to end the game on a 1-0 victory for the Urban Knights.

BYU-Hawaii controlled the game as soon as they set foot on the pitch. The Seasiders made their presence known within four minutes as a shot on goal by Ansley Warner set the pace for the rest of the game.

Sarah Bodily, Kaylie Adamson, Jana Wall and Tiffani Rice stonewalled the Academy of Art offense allowing them no opportunities to score in the first half, while the midfield led by Tess Hobbs executed perfect passes to give the BYU-Hawaii offense shot after shot.

The Seasider defense continued to showcase their skills as they stopped three consecutive Urban Knight corners in the 56th minute.

A corner kick by Hobbs in the 65th minute found Bodily who was able to get the shot off, but was stopped by a skilled Racheal Rempe.

Academy of Art's best and only opportunity to score in regulation time came in the 85th when Brooke Stewart took a shot, but was saved by Makenna Seymour to send the game into overtime.

The Urban Knights attacked first in overtime when a shot from Laura Mick in the 90th minute was saved by Seymour.

BYU-Hawaii retaliated with a shot of their own a minute later by Brittney Dyer, which was saved by Rempe.

Two corner kicks by Hobbs in the 97th minute went ineffective ending the first 100 minutes in a 0-0 tie.

The second half of overtime was marked by a shot by Dyer and another corner by Hobbs in the 107th minute.

BYU-Hawaii faces Notre Dame de Namur at 1:30 PDT in California. Live stats will be available online.
