Orchard's golden goal lifts Seasiders

ARCATA, Calif. – Freshman Kate Orchard's golden goal gave BYU-Hawaii women's soccer a 3-2 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic in their first match of the Lumberjack Classic on Friday afternoon.

Four minutes into extra time, Orchard took the ball from a defender in the box and rifled a shot from nine yards out to beat the keeper and give the Seasiders their first win of the season.

Palm Beach Atlantic struck first in the sixth minute on a strike from 30 yards out that put the ball just inside the back post. BYU-Hawaii countered quickly after junior Sarah Bodily gathered a ball between three defenders in the 15th minute, took one touch to the right and put the ball out of the goalies reach to tie the game up.

The Seasiders struck again to take the lead early in the second period when freshman Tess Hobbs led junior McKenzie Evans behind the defense to set up a strike from 20 yards out that beat the keeper.

The Sailfish applied more offensive pressure in the following minutes leading to a lofted ball from Morgan Campbell that freshman Makenna Seymour was unable to control as the ball went off her hands into the lower left corner.

BYU-Hawaii will continue play in the Lumberjack Classic tomorrow to take on tournament-host Humboldt State at 11 a.m. PDT. Live stats and streaming will be available for the game.
