PHOENIX (Nov. 5, 2013) - BYU-Hawaii goalkeepers Chris Pineda from the men's team and Megan McCain from the women's team have been selected as the Defender of the Week and a Final 5 recipient, respectively, by the Pacific West Conference for competition Oct. 28-Nov. 3.
The Defender of the Week honor is awarded each week to a back or goalkeeper for his outstanding defensive play. It marked the second time in three weeks Pineda has garnered the honor.
The Final 5 is given to the best five performances by a player or athlete in their respective sport. This is McCain's second Final 5 award this season.
Pineda, the conference leader with seven clean sheets, posted a 1-0-1 week for the Seasiders by pitching a pair of shutouts. He registered a 0.00 goals against average in 200:00 of action, recording 10 saves and a 1.000 save percentage over the two contests.
He led the Seasiders to a 0-0 double-overtime draw with Academy of Art on Oct. 28 by stopping all four shots on goal he faced and blanked Holy Names 3-0 on Nov. 2 after stopping six shots on net.
McCain posted a 2-0-0 record with two shutouts during the week. She blanked Academy of Art 2-0 on Oct. 28 and shut out Holy Names 1-0 in double-overtime on Nov. 2. McCain halted six shots on goal over two games and had a 1.000 save percentage and a 0.00 goals against average in 194:31 of action in net.
