HONOLULU (Feb. 27, 2014) - The BYU-Hawaii women's basketball team closed out the season with a 68-59 win over Chaminade on Thursday night.
Whitney Fieldsted scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Seasiders (4-21, 4-16) who took a lead midway through the first half and held it the rest of the way.
BYU-Hawaii shot 40.0 percent from the field, including 5 of 10 from downtown. Danna Lynn Hooper scored 18 points and 10 of 10 from the free throw line while Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo nabbed a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Down 11-9 early on, the Seasiders went on a 9-0 run to take the lead, capped by Talyn Bevell's 3-pointer with 10:46 to go in the first half. Bevell finished with eight points off the bench.
The Silverswords cut the lead to one point inside of four minutes in the first half but BYU-Hawaii responded with a 9-2 spurt to end the half and lead 36-28.
Marquessa Gilson opened the second half with a jumper to give the Seasiders a 10-point lead.
Late in the second half Chaminade trimmed the lead down to three at 61-58 after a series of free ones at the charity stripe with 3:05 to play.
Gilson squelched any more damage with a made jumper and BYU-Hawaii would maintain control the rest of the way to win it.
BYU-Hawaii wraps up the regular season with the win.
