LAIE, Hawaii (Jan. 8, 2014) - BYU-Hawaii kept it close but the women's basketball team came up short in an 80-65 loss to the Dominican Penguins on Wednesday night.
BYU-Hawaii (0-10, 0-5) had three scorers in double figures. Danna Lynn Hooper scored 18 and Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo went for a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jiashan Cui added 11 points as well.
Dominican (2-12, 2-6) outshot the Seasiders 49.1 percent to 40.4 but the game was tight through the evening with eight lead changes and five tie scores.
Whitney Fieldsted picked up the first four points from the inside starting the game for BYU-Hawaii, tying the score at 4-4 in the first few minutes.
Later on, BYU-Hawaii went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-15 lead with 8:51 left in the first half. Hooper drilled a triple and right after Tatupu-Leopoldo drained another trey to take the lead.
The Penguins recovered with 10-straight to regain control but not before the Seasiders answered again. Another 3-pointer from Tatupu-Leopoldo trimmed the edge to 27-24 with 4:02 until halftime.
Heading into the break, Dominican got hot again and went up 42-32.
The Penguin lead hovered around 10 points for the first 10 minutes of the first half. Hooper hit a shot to cut it to seven points early on and with 9:33 left Cui completed the old-school 3-point play to make it 63-55.
Another jumper from Cui cut the lead down to six points with eight minutes remaining but weren't able to cut it any closer down the stretch.
Dominican started to pull away and came out with an 80-65 win.
BYU-Hawaii plays Point Loma on Friday night at 5 p.m. HT in the Cannon Activities Center.
