LAIE, Hawaii (March 2, 2013)—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women's basketball team lost to UH-Hilo 70-65 tonight in the final Pacific West Conference game of the season.
The Seasiders, now 6-18 for the season and 5-13 in the conference, held a 32-18 halftime lead but couldn't hold on in the second half.
BYU-Hawaii scored the first points of the second half to take a 16-point 34-18 lead but the visiting Vulcans rallied back and caught the Seasiders at 53-53 with 5:48 to play in the game. The Vulcans scored the next four points and led the rest of the way, holding off the Seasiders down the stretch by hitting 7-8 from the free throw line.
Shayla Washington scored 30 points to go with nine rebounds and five steals to lead the Seasiders. Kristen Hartley tallied ten points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for the Seasiders and Brittany Hazelman grabbed ten rebounds. Washington, Hartley, and Hazelman were all honored by the team following the contest on "Senior Night."
Jameia McDuffie had 21 points and seven assists to lead UH-Hilo, now 13-10 for the season and 10-7 in the conference.
The BYU-Hawaii women's team will play Academy of Art on Thursday at 12:30 pm PST in Azusa, California in the opening game of the inaugural PacWest Conference post-season tournament. The tournament is single elimination and the Seasiders are the sixth seed in the six-team tournament. Academy of Art is the third seed.
