Seasiders end season with loss to Trailblazers

ST. GEORGE, Utah – BYU-Hawaii softball ended the season with 8-0 and 9-1 losses Monday against Dixie State at Karl Brooks Field.

Brandy Karl gave the Seasiders (9-33, 5-27 PacWest) their lone RBI of the day, finishing 1 for 2 from the plate in the second game. Alexa Barrett was the only player to record a hit in each game for BYU-Hawaii finishing 2 for 4 at the plate.

Janessa Bassett led the Trailblazers (34-11, 22-6 PacWest) at the plate going 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs. Aryn Feikert gave Dixie State a strong showing from the circle allowing one hit and walking two over five shutout innings.

Game one

With one out in the bottom of the first, Shelby Yung walked and stole second. Jessica Gonzalez followed with a double to left field to put the Trailblazers on the board. Autumn Woodfall was hit by a pitch and Mallory Paulson reached on a fielder's choice. A single by Brooklyn Beardshear allowed Woodfall to score and give Dixie State a 2-0 lead.

Two walked batters and a single by Bassett loaded the bases in the bottom of the second. Gonzalez hit a single to left center to add another run and Paulson tripled to deep center to clear the bases and extend the advantage to 6-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Arista Honey was walked and Cassidy Morton was put in to pinch run for her. Kristie Johnson singled to left center then Hartman doubled down the left field line, allowing Morton to score. Johnson made it home when Bassett singled to left field, ending the game 8-0.

Game two

In the bottom of the first, Bassett walked and Yung singled to first base to lead off the game. Honey doubled to left center to bring Bassett home before Gonzalez singled to score Yung and give Dixie an early 2-0 lead.

Singles by Beardshear and Bailey Gaffin gave the Trailblazers a strong start in the bottom of the second inning. Bassett tripled to right center, scoring two, and Yung singled to right to bring home Bassett. After two more walks loaded the bases, Yung scored on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the third, Hartman was walked and Beardshear singled before Gaffin doubled down the right field line, scoring Hartman. Another walk and a fielder's choice put two more runners on base. Kaitlyn Delange grounded out, but Gaffin was able to score made it home to make it 8-0 in favor of Dixie.

Hartman homered to left field to give the Trailblazers an additional run in the bottom of the fourth.

BYU-Hawaii was able to get one run in the top of the fifth. Alexa Barrett singled through the right side and Corallee Alexander pinch ran for her. Kalynn Latu singled though the left side and a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Captain put the runners in scoring position. Brandy Karl's single to the shortstop scored Alexander, but the Seasiders were unable to bring in Latu and keep the game alive.
