RIVERSIDE, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii women's softball fell in a doubleheader 6-1 and 10-2 to Cal Baptist on Tuesday at John C. Funk Stadium.
The Lancers (38-8, 21-5) received outstanding performances from its pitchers Ansley Coleman (16-3) and Kayla Hatch (13-2), allowing only seven hits in the doubleheader.
In the bottom of the second, Tayler Castro led off Cal Baptist with a walk before Jordan Mowatt singled to center field and Krista Mann singled on a bunt to load the bases. Jacque Lopez singled up the middle to score Castro. A sacrifice fly by Erin Burkhart brought Mowatt home to put the Lancers up 2-0.
After two outs in the bottom of the third frame, Ali Subia continued the Lancers' momentum with a home run to left field. Castro was walked again and stole second before scoring on a single by Mowatt, making it a 4-0 game.
After four scoreless innings for the Seasiders, Sarah Captain began the fifth inning with a home run to center to put BYU-Hawaii on the board.
Mowatt doubled in the bottom of the sixth and Mannwith a walk. Lopez singled to center field to score Mowatt and Mann crossed home plate on a sacrifice by Burkhart to end the game 6-1.
Lopez and Burkhart each singled before Meghan Wantz walked Subia to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning. Sarah Murphy and Castro hit back-to-back singles to give the Lancers an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the second frame, Makaela Williamson walked and advanced to second on Kalynn Latu's sacrifice bunt. Memea singled through the right side to score Williamson for the Seasiders' first run of the game. Captain reached base on a fielder's choice before she scored on Karl's double to left to tie the game 2-2.
The Lancers took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mowatt doubled to left center and Mann doubled to center field to score her. Lopez homered to center field for the 5-2 advantage.
Subia and Murphy each singled and advanced to scoring position on wild pitches in the bottom of the fifth. A fielding error put Heather Smith on base and allowed Subia to score then Mowatt doubled to left center to bring home two more runners. A double by Lopez provided a chance for Mowatt to score, extending the lead to 9-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, London Miller singled to left center and Soraya Shahbazian was put in to pinch run. Shahbazian advanced to second and third on a throwing error and wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly to end the game.
The Seasiders continue their road trip Friday at Concordia Irvine with the first game beginning at 2 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
