Seasiders fall to Silverswords

WAIPAHU, Hawaii - BYU-Hawaii softball fell 5-2 and 5-0 in a doubleheader against Chaminade Friday night at Central Oahu Regional Park. 

Sarah Captain led the Seasiders (9-23, 5-17 PacWest) in the first game with a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the plate including a run and a double. Tiffany Smith and Makaela Williamson each added an RBI.

Amber Manuel went 3-for-3 with five RBI for the Silverswords (11-29, 6-18 PacWest) in the first game, while Keani Passi went 1-for-3 with four RBI in the second game.

First game

Jenn Betian was hit by a pitch to get on base to start the first inning for the Silverswords. She advanced to second when Coco Stewart singled to left field and to third on a fielder's choice. Manuel brought home Betian with a single to right field.

Makaela Williamson singled to left center to get on base to lead off the top of the third and advanced to second on a groundball. Rebecca Mawson singled down the right field line to advance Williamson to third and Tiffany Smith doubled to left center to bring her home and tie the game.

Betian scored from second in the bottom of the frame when Manuel doubled down the left-field line to make it 2-1 in favor of Chaminade. 

In the bottom of the fifth Stewart singled through the left side and pinch runner Ashlyn Yagin advanced to second when Matsuoka singled up the middle. Manuel homered to center field to put the Silverswords up 5-1.

The Seasiders scored again in the sixth inning when Sarah Captain doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out. Williamson singled to shortstop to bring home Captain. BYU-Hawaii was unable to get any closer.

Second game

Chaminade jumped to a quick start in the second game of the night when Betian was hit by another pitch and Stewart doubled down the left field line to score her. Matsuoka walked and Manuel reached first on a fielding error to load the bases for Passi. Passi hit a grand slam to center to make it 5-0.

The Seasiders were unable to get their offense jump started against Chelsea Camello, managing only one hit and two walks in the game.

BYU-Hawaii will return to the diamond for a doubleheader April 18 at Azusa Pacific beginning at 4 p.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
