HILO, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii softball fell twice to Hilo, 12-0 and 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at UHH Softball Field.
Lizabelle Talataina led BYU-Hawaii (2-10, 0-4 PacWest) with a 4-of-5 performance at the plate. Danielle Pulido finished 5-for-7 with five RBI and two doubles for the Vulcans (12-5, 4-0 PacWest).
Tiffany Smith walked to start the first inning and stole second, but Billie Derleth (5-3) worked out of the jam to keep a clean sheet.
The Vulcans started off strong with back-to-back doubles to left from Victoria Garcia and Mari Kawano. Hilo singled on three consecutive at bats to take a 3-0 lead. After Brandi Wilson walked and Angela Aguinaga singled to load the bases with one out to continue the offensive momentum. Chenoa Au singled home one run and a sacrifice fly scored one more to make it 5-0 after the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning, Hilo's Amanda Lara doubled to right center to score two and Garcia picked up her second RBI of the day with a single to right to score Lara. Pulido plated two more runs with a single down the right-field line to make it 10-0 in favor of the Vulcans.
Lara finished the scoring in the first game with a two-run homer to center for the 12-0 victory.
The Seasiders threatened again to begin the second game after Brittany Vasquez singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Vasquez then beat out a throw to third to put runners on the corners with two outs, but Sarah Captain was caught off first base to end the threat. Garcia led off the bottom of the frame for Hilo with a double to right center and scored on a Bailey Gaspar single to take the 1-0 lead.
The Vulcans added three more runs off a single from Garcia and a double by Cristina Menjivar to take the 4-0 lead. Both teams were held scoreless over the next four innings.
BYU-Hawaii will return home to face Chaminade on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon HST. Live stats will be available online.
