LAIE, Hawaii – BYU-Hawaii softball fell in its season opening double header 13-5 and 6-1 to Augustana on Tuesday at the BYU-Hawaii softball field.
Shannon Peterson led the Vikings (5-1) going 4-for-4 from the plate with four RBI and two doubles.
Augustana struck early in the first game when Peterson cleared the bases with a double to left field to take the 3-0 lead after one.
In the top of the second inning, Sarah Kennedy hit a sacrifice fly and Maggie Kadrlik followed with a 3-run homer to right center to give the Vikings a 7-0 lead. Liz Talataina doubled to right center to lead off the bottom of the frame, but the Vikings' Carley Pickett (2-1) left her stranded.
Peterson scored in the third when Emily Wilson drew the bases-loaded walk. Another walk and two singles to the left gave Augustana three more runs. Peterson came up to bat a second time in the inning and brought home Pickett to extend the lead to 12-0.
BYU-Hawaii found its offensive groove in the bottom of the third. Smith doubled to right center in to bring home Anu Memea in and give the Seasiders their first run of the game. A single to left center from Brittany Vasques and Kalynn Latu's single through the left side added two more runs for the Seasiders. Makaela Williamson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the final run of the inning to make it a 12-4 game.
A fielding error and double in the top of the fourth helped cross Maddie Merriam home to make it 13-4. Smith doubled to left center in the bottom of the inning and Talataina then drove Smith home with her second double to round out the scoring in the first game.
Carly Peterson led off the second game with a homerun to center field to give them the early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Pickett singled to right field to bring home runners from second and third base. Kylie Rome reached first base on a fielder's choice and Pickett scored to increase the lead to 4-0 at the end of three.
Merriam and Abby Chandler each scored unearned in the sixth inning to extend the Viking lead to 6-0.
