BRISBANE, Calif. – BYU-Hawaii came up short against Academy of Art, losing 10-2 and 13-12 (8) on Tuesday at the Mission Blue Field.
Lizabelle Talataina led the Seasiders (8-26, 4-20 PacWest) hitting 5-for-7 from the plate, including a 3-for-4 performance in the second game including a homerun and five RBI, falling a triple short of the cycle.
The Seasiders loaded the bases quickly in the top of the first after Tiffany Smith was hit by a pitch, Makaela Williamson walked and Talataina singled to left field. Whitley Haimin singled down the left field line to bring in Smith and Williamson and advanced to second on the throw. The Urban Knights (24-24, 14-12 PacWest) answered in the next frame with back-to-back homers to tie the game up 2-2.
No runs were scored until the bottom of the third inning when an Urban Knights sacrifice fly brought one runner home and then an RBI double to left gave them the 4-2 lead.
The Urban Knight's bats remained hot in the bottom of the fifth scoring the six needed runs off four hits to win the 10-2 game in five innings.
Much like the first game, the bases were loaded for the Seasiders in the first inning after Courtney Hiruko, Smith and Haimin walked. Talataina then doubled to right center allowing Hiruko and Smith to score. Williamson then reached first on fielder's choice when Academy of Art failed to tag Haimin at third. With the bases loaded once again, Anu Memea reached first on another fielder's choice after Haimin beat the throw home. Brittany Vasquez grounded out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, but Talataina crossed the plate to score the fourth run of the inning. Kalynn Latu sacrificed to left field to bring Williamson home to finish the inning with a 5-0 lead. Academy of Art responded with a solo shot to right field to close the gap to four.
With a runner on first and third, Talataina singled to left field bringing Smith home in the top of the second. Memea walked to load the bases with one out before Vasquez singled through the right side to score another. Latu doubled down the left-field line allowing Williamson and Memea to bring the Seasider lead to 9-1.
The Seasdiers were unable to score in the next three inning, allowing the Urban Knights to score nine unanswered to take the 10-9 lead by the end of the fifth inning.
The tides changed once again for the Seasiders in the sixth inning as Talataina homered with Haimin on first base to retake the lead. Memea then doubled to left center and Vasquez singled to right field to make it 12-10. The Urban Knights responded with a homer in the bottom of the frame making it a 12-11 game in favor of BYU-Hawaii heading to the final inning.
Despite having players in scoring positions in the seventh and eighth innings the Seasiders were unable to capitalize. This gave Academy of Art an edge as they scored one run in each of the remaining innings to take a 13-12 victory.
The Seasiders return to action tomorrow taking on Academy of Art once again at noon and 2 p.m. PDT in California. Live stats will be available online.
