LAIE, Hawaii - BYU-Hawaii fell in its final home games to Chaminade, losing 8-5 and 8-0 on Friday at the BYU-Hawaii softball field.
Whitney Gustafson led the Seasiders (7-25, 4-18 PacWest) from the plate in the first game hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Lizabelle Talataina added a 2-for-3 performance in the second game including a triple.
BYU-Hawaii fell behind early in both games and was unable to keep Chaminade off the scoreboard.
The Silverswords scored the first seven runs of the first game before BYU-Hawaii was able to get on the board. Back-to-back singles by Gustafson and Whitley Haimin followed by a walk from T. Anu Memea loaded the bases for the Seasiders. Kalynn Latu then doubled to straight center-field to bring in two runs and close the gap to five.
After the Swords added a run in the top of the fifth, Tiffany Smith led off the bottom of the frame with a double to right center. Gustafson then singled to right field to make it an 8-3 Chaminade lead.
The Seasiders made one more push at the comeback when Josey Walker walked and Gustafson singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. A fielding error allowed Walker to score from third and a Memea single brought home Gustafson to close the gap to three. Chaminade was able to record the final out of the inning to keep the tying run off the base paths.
Chaminade held a slim 3-0 lead in the second game when an Aja Keyes' single was bobbled in right field allowing Keyes to score on the error and take a 7-0 lead. The Seasiders were unable to get any offense going falling 8-0.
The Seasiders will return to the mainland to play Academy of Art beginning at 10 a.m. PDT. Live stats will be available online.
