LAIE, Hawaii (April 25, 2014) - In her final game as a Seasider, BYU-Hawaii softball pitcher Gabby Hawkins pitched a shutout in a 1-0 victory over UH-Hilo for BYU-Hawaii as they finish the 2014 season with a victory.
A late rally in game one came up short, but Hawkins was dominant, giving up just five singles, striking out four in 7.0 innings for her last outing as a Seasider.
With the win, BYU-Hawaii (11-27, 7-25) beats Hilo (20-18, 12-11) for the first time since February of 2009.
The Seasiders got their lone run when Whitney Gustafson singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth . A sacrifice bunt moved her to second and then Rebecca Mawson doubled to left field to bring her in.
Gustafson and Mawson both went 3 for 5 at the plate over the two games.
The run was all Hawkins would need as she slammed the door and went the distance to finish the year on high note.
In game one, the Vulcans picked up one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.
An RBI double in the fifth and another RBI single in the seventh made it 5-0 heading into the Seasiders last ups.
Madeline Johnson hit a slow roller to third and beat the throw to score Barrett. Alvarez headed for home on the throw and a good head-first slide dodged the tag to make it 5-2. The rally ended with a groundout however and the Seasiders came up short 5-2.
