Late rally not enough in game one, bats quiet in game two

ST. GEORGE, Utah (April 15, 2014) -The BYU-Hawaii softball team fell in both games against Dixie State on Tuesday, 7-1 in the first and 9-1 in the second over five innings.

The first game was a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Pitcher Taylor Alvarez had kept the Red Storm quiet but a leadoff single got Dixie State going.

A sac bunt and a double made it 1-0 and later another double with two outs but two on drove in two more, putting the Seasiders behind 3-0.

A two-out triple in the sixth with another on gave Dixie State a 4-0 lead and then a big blast over the left field wall stretched the Red Storm lead to 7-0 at the end of the sixth inning.

In a last effort, the Seasiders loaded the bases with no one out after a Kalynn Latu was hit by a pitch and Josey Walker and Alexa Barrett walked. It went to two outs before the Seasiders brought a run in as Whitney Gustafson took a pitch off the shoulder to bring in Latu to put BYU-Hawaii on the board but the really ended there in a 7-1 loss.

The Seasiders got off to a better start in game two, take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gustafson was hit by another pitch and got over to third after a sac bunt and a groundout to move her over.

Makaela Williamson singled down the right field line to score Gustafson.

In the bottom half of the first however, Dixie State answered with one run to knot it up at 1-1 after back-to-back doubles.

The Seasiders offense went cold after that and the Red Storm went up after a throwing error and a single to make it 2-1. Dixie would add three in the third and come back with four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

BYU-Hawaii will play a four-game series at Cal Baptist beginning Friday.
