SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 27 BYU-Hawaii men's tennis fell 5-3 in Saturday's third place match against No. 40 Hawaii Hilo of the PacWest Men's Championships at Surprise Tennis Complex.
Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez grabbed the first doubles match for the Vulcans (13-12) 8-5 over Guillermo Ucelay Pueyo and Simon Guillin. Ibrahim Karmadzha and Ian Galli leveled the match for the Seasiders (17-9) after they defeated Daniel Tada and Gregory Zukeran 8-6 on court three. The final pairing traded games until Vaclav Slezak and Stefan Coney won the tiebreaker for the 9-8 (5) match victory.
Figlia topped Guillin 6-2, 6-2 and Slezak won 7-5, 6-1 over S. Galli to put Hilo within a match of the victory. BYU-Hawaii didn't go down without a fight as Lu overcame an early deficit in the first set to win 7-5 and took the match with a 6-0 win in the second set.
Karmadzha added a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory to put the Seasiders within a point at 4-3, but Ucelay fell in a back-and-forth 7-6, 7-6 match with Fillat and the Vulcans took the match.
This match concluded BYU-Hawaii's season.
